Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Corrections is seeking an Office Assistant to work in the Mailroom at Pontiac Correctional Center. This position is responsible for sorting mail and keyboarding correspondence. We encourage all qualified applicants to apply. 

Essential Functions

  • Assists supervisor in sorting incoming mail, separating administration mail, individual in custody regular mail, individual in custody legal mail, packages, magazines, and papers.
  • Keyboards correspondence for supervisor concerning individual in custody inquiries about their mail, contraband being returned, monthly reports, quarterly reports, and minutes of the monthly Mail Office meetings.
  • Serves as back-up to facility staff.
  • Puts money order on Trust Fund Accounts.
  • Posts and dates legal packets that are received to individual in custody mail cards.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of high school AND one (1) year of related office experience.
  • Requires ability to keyboard accurately at 35 wpm.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
