Appointment Type: Temporary Provisional (TPV), limited to no more than 3 years in duration. This temporary position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process, is considered "at will" and shall serve at the discretion of the Department Head. This position will be subject to the Permanent Civil Service examination process. Successful participation in the Permanent Civil Service examination and selection through an open competitive process is needed in order to be considered for the permanent appointment.

Role description

Under general supervision, performs complex illustrator and graphic design work, including preparation of reports, flyers, brochures, graphs, charts, infographics, ads, maps, signage, banners, event collateral, large format displays, announcements, and web and social media graphics; and performs related duties as required.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Create original digital and print graphics and illustration projects. Projects may include, but are not limited to reports, flyers, brochures, graphs, charts, ads, infographics, maps, signage, banners, event collateral, large format displays, announcements, and web and social media graphics.
  • Paints and draws illustrations for inclusion in a variety of library promotional materials, reports and signage.
  • May complete artistic hand lettering and embossing; arranges displays of photographs and drawings for publicity; produces desktop lettering and designs; designs and executes exhibit panels of special projects.
  • Communicate and coordinate with stakeholders to discuss their graphic and illustrator needs, develop concepts, and acquire approval of final designs.
  • Prepare and package final design files for printing or web use.
  • Prepares sketches, graphs, charts, posters, diagrams, final drawings, exhibits and photographs either from direct consultation with staff members or from rough sketches.
  • Select print materials, coordinate print production, conduct press checks and approve final prints for quality.
  • Capture and edit photographic images to incorporate into design layouts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • A broad array of creative design experience in both print and web
  • Advanced knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite: InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Microsoft Office Suite: Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Ability to prepare a wide variety of artistic media as well as sketches, lettering, painting and drafting using computer technology or tools of the art.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects
  • Flexibility to pick up extra hours as needed.


How to qualify

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Possession of a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university; AND

Experience: Four (4) years professional, journey-level experience in graphic design or commercial art. This experience must include journey-level experience using computer-based desktop publishing (DTP) platform (Mac or PC) with associated scanners, printers, and software.

Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.

Verification of qualifying experience, when requested, must be documented on the employer's business letterhead and must include the name of the applicant, job title(s), dates of employment, description of job duties performed, and signature of the employer or the employer’s authorized representative. Copies of income tax papers or other documents listing occupation and total earnings must be submitted. Employees of the City and County of San Francisco may submit performance evaluations showing duties performed to verify qualifying City experience. City employees will receive credit for the duties of the class to which appointed. Credit for experience obtained outside of the employee's class will be allowed only if recorded in accordance with the provisions of Civil Service Commission Rules. Verification may be waived if impossible to obtain. The applicant must submit a signed statement explaining why verification cannot be obtained. Waiver requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Failure to provide the required verification, or request for waiver when requested may result in rejection of the application.
