Part-Time, In-Person

Who We Are: Founded by Michigan survivors to create a lasting memorial to the victims of the Holocaust, The Zekelman Holocaust Center ("The HC") is guided by its mission to engage, educate, and empower by remembering the Holocaust. The Center is one of the largest and oldest Holocaust museums in the United States and we have welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors to our museum. Our 55,000 square foot facility is home to our newly renovated multi-million-dollar permanent exhibit featuring our extensive collection of survivor testimonies, artifacts, archival documents, paintings, and films, an authentic boxcar, and a sapling from the tree located outside Anne Frank's hiding place window that is described in her diary. Embedded in the community, the Center is home to over 50 trained staff members. Our robust Education Department offers school and adult groups customized tours, educational workshops, and professional development training programs. Guests are empowered to apply the lessons learned to create a compassionate society where people take responsible action.

Summary of Responsibilities: The primary role of the Museum Educator is to lead multiple museum tours per day. They will work with a team that conducts consultations and intake interviews with teachers and group leaders in order to plan and lead customized and interactive tours of The HC to our student and adult visitors. In so doing, Museum Educators help us actualize our mission to engage, educate, and empower our visitors by remembering the Holocaust, and to further our goal to be the nexus of Holocaust education in Michigan.

Portfolio Responsibilities:
  • Plan and lead guided tours of The HC's core exhibit - 90%
  • Provide support to initiatives and projects in the Education Department - 10%
Lead Guided Tours of The HC's Core Exhibit (90%)
  • After initial training and through ongoing professional development and research, demonstrate proficiency in teaching all areas of the HC's exhibit. The goal of tours is to educate visitors about the Holocaust and empower them to take action in our world today.
  • Lead multiple interactive and customized museum tours per day in which student and adult groups explore, discover, and learn about the Holocaust by engaging with artifacts and each other.
  • Work with teammates to implement smooth arrival & welcome, tour launch, and group dismissal procedures.
  • Work with the education team and supervisors to develop, evaluate and refine learning experiences.
  • Participate in reflective practice, individually and as part of a team to improve teaching skills.
Provide support to initiatives and projects in the Education Department (10%)
  • Provide administrative and operational support, as well as research and content development to projects and programs as needed.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Education, History, Humanities, Arts, Art Education, Psychology, or a related field; graduate students welcome;
  • Experience and desire working with people of all backgrounds;
  • Excellent public speaking, presentation, and listening skills;
  • Adapts quickly to change, and works well in a fast-paced work environment;
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, guest services demeanor, and the desire and ability to work with a close-knit team;
  • Intellectual curiosity about Holocaust history and how it relates to contemporary social issues
  • Ability to stand and walk for up to three hours in a day, with breaks
  • Reliable transportation is required
  • Knowledge of languages other than English beneficial
  • Ability to work occasional Sundays and evenings
